Bergen Cruise Terminal to the City Centre: Which Berth, and How to Reach Town

Your Bergen cruise berth decides whether you walk straight into Bryggen or use the port shuttle from Dokken.

Short answer

Most ships dock at Skolten or Bontelabo, right by the old Bryggen wharf, so you walk into the centre in about 10 to 15 minutes with no transfer. On a bigger ship you may be sent to Jekteviken or Dokken instead, about 2 km south in the working port, and there you take the free shuttle rather than walk the industrial stretch. Which quay you get is decided close to the day, so check the Bergen Havn arrivals list beforehand and be ready for either.

Central quays

The central quays: Skolten, Bontelabo, Festningskaien

Most cruise ships use the central quays, and this is the one to hope for. Skolten sits right beside Bergenhus Fortress, and from there it is a flat, well-signed walk south along the waterfront, past the fortress and into Bryggen and the Fish Market, roughly 600 to 900 metres, so 5 to 10 minutes at an easy pace. Bontelabo is just north of Skolten and used when Skolten is full; the walk is much the same. Festningskaien is the closest of all to Bryggen, but not every ship can use it. From any of these you need no shuttle and no taxi: you walk off and you are in the old town.

Far berth

Jekteviken and Dokken: the far one

Larger ships and overflow calls go to Jekteviken or Dokken, about 2 to 2.5 km south of the centre in the working container port. From here the honest advice is to take the free shuttle the port provides rather than walk, because the route out through the industrial area is around 25 to 30 minutes and is not a pleasant stroll. The shuttle drops you near the centre, a short walk from Bryggen. Taxis are usually there but limited on a busy cruise day, and Norwegian fares are high, so the shuttle is normally the better choice.

Before you sail

How to find out your berth before you sail

You can often see where your ship will dock on the Bergen Havn arrivals list, which shows the day's cruise calls and quays, and your cruise line's port notes may say too. The one caveat: quay assignments can change at short notice, so treat it as a likely answer rather than a guarantee, and plan a day that works whether you walk in from Skolten or shuttle in from Dokken.

In town

Once you are in town

However you arrive, the centre is compact and walkable. Bryggen and the Fish Market are right there, and the Fløibanen funicular up Mount Fløyen is a short walk further. For a full plan of what fits your hours ashore, see my things to do in Bergen and the main Bergen cruise guide.

Terminal FAQ

Quick answers.

Can you walk from the Bergen cruise port to the city centre?

From the central quays, yes, easily. Skolten and Bontelabo are a flat 10 to 15 minute walk from Bryggen along the harbour. From Jekteviken or Dokken it is about 25 to 30 minutes through the industrial port, so most people take the free shuttle instead.

How far is Skolten from Bryggen?

Around 600 to 900 metres, a 5 to 10 minute walk south along the waterfront past Bergenhus Fortress. It is flat and well signed.

Is the shuttle from Dokken free?

The port normally provides a free shuttle from the Jekteviken and Dokken berths into the centre. Confirm it with your ship, but you should not need to pay to reach town from the far quay.

How do I know which quay my ship will use?

Check the Bergen Havn arrivals list and your cruise line's port notes. Quay assignments can change close to the day, so plan a day that works from either the central quays or Dokken.

How I plan this guide

I base this page on Bergen Havn berth locations, walking distances, the arrivals list, and walking the route myself. I'm independent, not a cruise line, port authority, or tour operator. Return-to-ship safety always comes first.
