Only one cruise ship gets the quay at Skjolden. Everyone else anchors and tenders. That is not a rule about ship size. It is an allocation made between the port and the lines, so a large ship can be alongside while a smaller one waits at anchor the same afternoon. You cannot tell from your deck plan which one you will be.
Whether you are alongside or tendering determines how much of the day you really have ashore. Alongside, you walk off and the village is a flat walk or a short shuttle ride. At anchor, add a tender queue at both ends and plan a shorter day than the brochure implies.
The fjord is the reason to be here, and the RIB boats leave from the marina a few minutes from the terminal. The glacier everyone asks about is 63 km away and will consume most of your port day.
If this were my port day
If this were my only visit to Skjolden, I would not spend it driving away from the fjord. Lustrafjord is the innermost arm of the longest fjord in Norway and you are already at the end of it, so the ninety-minute RIB is the shortest distance between your gangway and the reason you sailed here. I would not go to Nigardsbreen. It is 63 km each way, about an hour of driving in each direction, and the guided viewpoint walk from the car park runs around two and a half hours. That is four and a half hours before you have thought about a return buffer, to see a glacier that Olden puts 45 minutes from its quay.

My caution: The operator says this tour does not run on days with large cruise ship arrivals, because capacity is limited. Check your date before you plan the day around it. The trail is well maintained but slippery after rain.

Getting around from the quay
Skjolden is where the Sognefjord runs out of fjord. Your ship spends most of the morning sailing inland to get here, up Norway’s longest and deepest fjord and then into Lustrafjord, its innermost arm, and the water turns pale green from glacier melt on the way. The sail-in is a large part of what you came for, and it happens before anyone opens a gangway. Then it stops. There is no town at the end of it, only a village of 238 people ringed by mountains, with Jotunheim behind and Jostedalsbreen to the north. It helps to know what each fjord port is actually for. Olden is about glaciers. Flåm is about the railway. Skjolden is about being at the very end of the fjord.

The port takes one ship alongside the quay. Additional ships go to anchorage. That is an allocation decision made between the port and the lines, not a rule about ship size, so a big ship can be alongside and a smaller one at anchor on the same day. The quay itself is 127.5 m by 6 m and takes multi-door gangways on even the longest ships.<br /><br />If you tender, the port describes the transfer plainly: two steps from the tender to the pier, then one step onto a gangway to shore. The pier takes wheelchairs, but staff usually have to lift them, and the gangway gets steep at low tide. If someone in your party has limited mobility, that sentence is the one that matters, and it is the port’s own wording.<br /><br />Read the port’s own policy before you trust a guide that promises you will walk off. Several of the pages ranking for this port do not describe the berth rule at all.

If the weather turns
You are at the end of a long, sheltered fjord ringed by mountains, so the quay is usually calmer than the open coast. Rain here is soft and persistent rather than driven.
The mountains are a different proposition. Sognefjellet, the road up into Jotunheim, opened on 2 April in 2026 and can still close at night or in bad weather after opening. If your excursion goes up there, weather is a real cancellation risk rather than a formality. Bring layers and something waterproof, and expect the RIB to be colder than the walk.
Practical essentials
A souvenir shop, restrooms and a cafeteria, plus tourist maps and free wifi. The port has recently added a controlled access gate and space to stage up to 20 coaches.
Cafés, restaurants, a tourist information centre, a supermarket, SUP and bike rental. This is a hamlet, so plan around limited opening hours rather than choice.
Two steps from tender to pier, then one onto the gangway. Wheelchairs fit, but usually need lifting, and the gangway is steep at low tide. Alongside is straightforward.
Skjolden Llamas ask for advance booking and cannot always take walk-ups. The RIB and waterfall hike does not run on the busiest cruise days.
Statnett is building new power line crossings over the Sognefjord, and the port warns that deviations can occur.
