Northern lights tour from a cruise ship in Tromsø: does it fit your call?

The answer depends on your ship's port times, the tour's latest return and your transfer.

Short answer

Not on the coastal ship's stop. Havila's ship is in Tromsø from 14:15 to 18:15 northbound and from 23:45 to 01:30 southbound. The aurora tour I could verify with a guaranteed return leaves at 20:00 and is back four hours later.

On about one in five of this winter's published cruise calls, that tour has a window, mostly on ships that stay overnight. A tour also fits if you sleep in Tromsø before or after your voyage.

About this guide. This is a sourced planning guide. Times, quays, prices and policies come from Tromsø Harbour and the ship and tour operators' own pages, read in October 2026. The verdicts are my judgement from those facts. I haven't walked these routes or taken these tours myself. Where a figure isn't published, I say so instead of guessing.

Coastal voyage

Can I do an aurora tour on the Havila or Hurtigruten stop in Tromsø?

No. The times don't overlap.

Northbound, Havila arrives at 14:15 and sails at 18:15. The Express Aurora Hunt meets at 19:50 and leaves at 20:00. By then your ship has been gone for an hour and three quarters.

Southbound, the ship arrives at 23:45 and sails at 01:30. That same tour is due back at midnight. You'd be stepping ashore as it finishes.

A longer tour fits even less.

Hurtigruten's help page names its terminal in Tromsø (Prostneset) but doesn't give the times. Check them in your own voyage documents before you rely on mine.

My verdict: don't book a land aurora tour for this stop. On the coastal route you spend the dark hours at sea anyway, which is the point of the trip.

Starting or ending in Tromsø

My voyage starts or ends in Tromsø. When should I book?

Book for an evening you sleep in Tromsø, not the evening you board.

Havila's Tromsø round voyage leaves Tromsø northbound, and the northbound ship sails at 18:15. The tour leaves at 20:00. So the night before boarding is the one that works.

Ending in Tromsø, the southbound ship arrives at 23:45. Too late for that night's tour. If you stay on, book the next evening.

One thing to plan around: Wandering Owl, which runs the Express hunt, says it only cancels if conditions are unsafe. Cloud is not a reason. If you have two nights, book the first. Then a cloudy night still leaves you a second chance.

Cruise ships

I'm on a cruise ship. Does mine stay late enough?

Tromsø Harbour publishes its cruise calls with arrival time, departure time and quay. On 14 October 2026 its list showed 108 cruise calls arriving between 14 October 2026 and 15 April 2027. That's the cruise-ship list only. The daily Havila and Hurtigruten coastal stops aren't on it.

I checked each of those 108 calls against one tour: the Express hunt's 20:00 departure, which needs you at the meeting point by 19:50 and is guaranteed back four hours later, at midnight. The counts are for that tour and that departure only:

  • 21 calls leave a window for the tour, with at least six hours between the midnight return and the ship sailing. That's a cautious line for counting, not a buffer you need. Almost all are overnight stays.
  • 4 calls are tight. The ship sails between 01:00 and 02:30.
  • 83 calls leave no window for this tour. The ship sails before midnight, or arrives too late for the 19:50 meeting.

A window on the published call is not a guarantee. It still depends on the tour's actual return on the night, your transfer back, and your ship's all-aboard time, which the port's list doesn't show.

Example with a window: Fred. Olsen's Borealis (In Search of the Northern Lights, S2629). It arrives at 12:30 on 15 November and sails at 17:00 on 16 November.

Example with none: Ambassador's Ambition (Norway's Land of the Northern Lights, A22703) on 14 March 2027. It's in port 09:00–19:00, so it sails an hour before the tour leaves.

The tour I'd book

Express Aurora Hunt: a shorter chase with cruise-port pickup

Suits: cruise passengers who can be at the meeting point by 19:50, or at a Breivika pickup the operator has confirmed, and whose ship sails well after midnight, and anyone sleeping in Tromsø before or after a voyage. Doesn't suit: the coastal ship's Tromsø stop.

  • Times: meets 19:50 in front of Scandic Ishavshotel, Fredrik Langes gate 2, for the 20:00 departure. Wandering Owl's own site also lists a 21:00 departure, meeting 20:50.
  • Return: the booking page says Wandering Owl “guarantees to return you to the city centre or cruise ship dock 4 hours from the departure time”. The tour page says “by midnight”. For the 21:00 departure those two don't agree, so ask which applies before you book it.
  • Pickup: GetYourGuide's listing names Breivika pickup and drop-off as well as the hotel. If your ship is at Breivika, put the ship's name in the booking and get the pickup confirmed.
  • Price: from NOK 1,200 per adult on Wandering Owl's site (October 2026). On 15 October GetYourGuide showed it from US$125 and Viator from US$129. I can't say which is cheapest on your date.
  • Rules: runs only with at least 4 adults booked. 24-hour cancellation. It doesn't cancel for cloud, and its page doesn't say whether there's a refund if the lights don't show. Season 15 September to 15 April.

Before the day, confirm the departure time and latest return for your date, and that the minimum of 4 adults is met.

Book the Express Aurora Hunt on GetYourGuide

Viator sells the same tour. Its listing gives Scandic Ishavshotel as the meeting and end point and doesn't mention Breivika, so a Viator booking doesn't establish a Breivika pickup or drop-off. GetYourGuide's listing does name Breivika. Whichever you use, get the pickup and drop-off confirmed by Wandering Owl before you rely on them.

A selection of Tromsø aurora tours on GetYourGuide (affiliate links, like the button above). I haven't checked these against your ship, and none fits the coastal ship's stop. Check each tour's end time against your all-aboard and transfer.

Overnight calls

My ship stays overnight in Tromsø. Independent tour or the ship's?

Both can work. How much you need to confirm depends on when your ship sails:

  • Ship sails soon after the tour ends (around 01:00–02:30): get the tour's latest return in writing, and add your transfer back. The advertised duration isn't enough.
  • Ship sails the next day: the advertised duration is a fair planning basis if it leaves plenty of time before all-aboard, transfer included. A morning sailing leaves much less room than an afternoon one. Check how you get back to the quay at night.

Want to go further than the Express hunt?

The Express hunt's limit is distance. Wandering Owl says it “stays closer to the city” and recommends its longer Aurora Hunt if you want to go further. That one runs 5–8 hours from 17:30 and drops off at Breivika among other stops. Its page gives no latest return; at the top of that range you'd be back around 01:30. If your ship sails the next afternoon, the longer hunt gives you more chance of finding clear sky.

The ship's own aurora tour

Fred. Olsen's page for S2629 mentions evening tours in search of the lights but doesn't publish a price. So I can't compare cost. Ask on board for the price, where the coach collects you, and whether the return is timed to the ship.

The ship's tour is the right choice if:

  • the independent operator can't confirm a pickup for your quay;
  • the departure might not reach its minimum;
  • you'd rather have one booking and let the ship handle transport at night.

Skip tours with no fixed end if you sail that night or next morning

If your ship sails the same night or the next morning, skip a tour that has no set end time. The Snow-travels tour on GetYourGuide sells a 6–8 hour option with no set time or distance limit. That's the appeal on a land holiday. With a ship sailing a few hours later, you can't plan around it.

Quays

Where do cruise ships dock in Tromsø?

Tromsø Harbour's quay list:

  • Quay 7, Prostneset, city centre: the coastal voyage. The Hurtigruten terminal is here, at Samuel Arnesens gate 5.
  • Quay 8, city centre: cruise ships.
  • Breivika, Quays 24 (20–24) and 25: cruise ships among other traffic. Most large ships on the cruise-call list use Kai 21 at Breivika.

Tromsø Harbour puts Breivika at about 4 km north of the city centre. That figure is to the centre in general, not a measured route to any tour's meeting point. Its guidance: bus no. 42 runs between Breivika and the centre, and from the port you use the underpass and follow the signs to the stop for bus no. 42 towards Eidkjosen.

Seventeen of the 21 calls with a window this season are at Breivika. So for most passengers who can do the tour, the transfer is the real question. Arrange the operator's Breivika pickup, take the ship's tour, or allow for the bus.

The Express hunt meets at Scandic Ishavshotel in the centre. I haven't measured the walk from Quay 7 or Quay 8, so I won't give you a time for it.

Honest list

What should I skip?

  • A land aurora tour on the coastal ship's Tromsø stop. The ship has sailed, or has barely arrived, when the tour runs.
  • Any aurora tour whose confirmed latest return, plus your transfer, doesn't land before your all-aboard. For the Express hunt's 20:00 departure, that rules out ships sailing before midnight.
  • Any chase without a confirmed return time, if your ship sails the same night or the next morning.

Weather

What if it's cloudy?

The tours I checked run in cloud; the lights may not show. Wandering Owl cancels only for safety, and its page doesn't state a no-lights refund.

If you're on the coastal ship, you have several nights at sea anyway. If you're in Tromsø for one evening, that single tour is your one try. Know that before you pay.

How I plan this guide

I live on the Norwegian west coast and I am independent – not a cruise line, a port authority or a tour operator. Every time, quay and price on this page comes from the source listed below, with the date I read it. The call counts are my own arithmetic from Tromsø Harbour's published list. None of the links below are affiliate links; the GetYourGuide and Viator booking links in the Express and More tours sections are. Ship schedules and tour terms change – your ship's daily programme and the operator's booking confirmation outrank this page.
